Julie Kerstetter

PE Teacher

I am thrilled to be back at Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs as the PE Coach once again. With 30 years of experience in both mathematics and physical education, I am excited to bring my passion for teaching PE to our students this year.

I began my career at West Texas A&M, where I played college basketball from 1983 to 1985 and earned my BS in Education in 1985. I stayed in West Texas to continue coaching women’s basketball, serving as a full-time assistant coach until 1989. I then moved to Perryton, Texas, where I taught math and coached volleyball, basketball, and track for one year.

After marrying, I relocated to Garden City, Kansas, where I taught in the Holcomb High School Math Department for seven years while coaching volleyball, basketball, and track once again. Later, I chose to be a stay-at-home mom to my three children—Drew, Megan, and Derek.

In 2002, we moved to San Antonio, Texas, where I began teaching at Hardy Oak Elementary under the leadership of Mrs. Newman. I truly loved every minute of that experience. When my youngest son, Derek, moved on to Lopez Middle School, I had the opportunity to transfer to Reagan High School. I taught there for 11 years before deciding to retire.

When a math position opened at BFSMS, I was thrilled to return to teaching. I spent three years teaching math to 5th–8th graders before moving into my current role as Elementary PE Coach. I am incredibly happy to be back for my 3rd year in PE, helping students develop not only physical skills but also valuable life lessons. We’re going to have a fantastic year, and I am here to support my students in every way possible.

I am a huge UT Longhorn fan, as Derek was a starter on the Longhorn football team for five years (thanks to the extra year granted during COVID). He played on the offensive line, so you’ll often see me in burnt orange—Hook ’em Horns! Derek now lives in San Antonio and recently celebrated his first wedding anniversary with his high school sweetheart, Sara.

My daughter, Megan, is a registered nurse who has now chosen to follow in my teaching footsteps. She instructs nursing students in Prosper ISD. She and her husband, Chase, just moved into their newly built home and are expecting their first child in January.

My oldest son, Drew, is a petroleum engineer currently working as a medical sales representative in Houston, specializing in spinal products. He and his wife, Christina, have two wonderful children—Davis, almost 3, and Hallie, who will turn 1 in November. Being a grandmother is one of my greatest joys!

I live with my husband of over 30 years, Devin, and our two dogs, Murray and Dax. I am looking forward to another amazing year—welcoming new students, reconnecting with returning ones, and encouraging everyone to embrace physical fitness and healthy living.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 40:31:

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

This verse reminds me that those who place their hope and trust in God will be renewed with the strength to overcome challenges and persevere. My students will hear me reference this often in PE. Let’s make this a fantastic year at BFSMS!!!!

Take care,

Coach Kerstetter (Coach K)
